Social Program - Organized Trips

The GfKl offers some social highlights during the 28th annual conference. Due to the huge amount of planned sessions, the individual excursions will be scattered over all conference days.

Some of the proposed places are also part of the "Route of Industrial Heritage" (Route der Industriekultur).

Steel Coking Plant Hansa

After the plant was shut down in 1992, (it opened in 1928) nature managed to regain a part of the complex. As an "accessible sculpture," the complex provides unusual insights into its past industrial history, as well as into a constantly changing kind of industry. On the hands-on route through the complex, the visitor can learn about technology, history, and the forms of plant life that have begun to develop in the region. A visit to the impressive compressor hall with its enormous machines is also integrated into this path.

"The Hansa Coking Plant is the last of the 17 coking plants which were built during the rationalisation boom in the 1920s. As a central plant it was part of an integrated system with the nearby colliery and steelworks. It was closed down in 1992 and is now the headquarters of the NRW Foundation for the Preservation of Industrial Monuments and Historical Culture. The Foundation aims to preserve the unique aesthetic qualities of the site. Visitors can walk around this "gigantic sculpture" and gain an unusual insight into a bygone industrial epoch and the ever-changing flora and fauna which have sprung up here. An adventure trail leads visitors to the imposing compressor house with its huge engines, and to the coal tower from which there is a fascinating panorama view of Dortmund."

Brewery Inspection and Beer Test

The triangle trade of steel, coal, and beer brought a period of prosperity to the old "Free Imperial City of Dortmund". With the brewery inspections the brewing master introduces the guests into the secrets of the beer brewing and into the history of the Hoevels house brewery. Apart from the detailed information in the brewery - which not necessarily has to be dry - you can take the opportunity to test the three different Hoevels beers.

The brewery lies in the city of Dortmund, near the theater. It is easy to reach by public transport. (S-Bahn S1 to Dortmund main station (Dortmund Hauptbahnhof (HBF), then about 15 minutes to walk (turn to the right in front of the station and follow the great circle streets (Königswall, Hoher Wall), otherwise you can take the metro to "Stadtgarten" and walk some minutes, the brewery lies behind the theater (green triangle ball-shaped roof))

German mining museum in Bochum

The German Mining Museum Bochum (Deutsches Bergbaumuseum) is one of Germany's most popular museums being visited by almost 400,000 people a year, and the most important mining museum worldwide. Several exhibitions and an original subterranean visiting mine offer an insight into the world of coal mining.
We will visit the mining museum by coach. The coach will start and end at the university.

"The pithead gear of the former Dortmund Zeche Germania towering above the German Mining Museum in Bochum can be seen by passers-by for miles around. Visitors can travel in a miners' cage to the top of the tower where there are great views of much of the Ruhrgebiet. The museum building was designed by the renowned industrial architect, Fritz Schupp, in the 1930s. Now it houses a comprehensive historical collection of mining items whose various departments and special exhibitions recount the history of mining around the world. The underground mock mining galleries beneath the museum (around 2.5 km in all) are a particular attraction and give a close-up view of the huge changes which have occurred in underground mining."

DASA

The German Occupational Safety and Health Exhibition (DASA) is a place to visit for an educational experience. Information can be found here about the world of work and its importance in society. The DASA was opened in 1993 as part of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. You will visit an exhibition involving plenty of leisure activity and to find out how the future will look in view of the changes taking place in the world of work.

"People, work, technology: these three words are the motto of the German Occupational Safety and Health Exhibition. Over an area more than 13,000 square metres visitors can take a fascinating day-trip into the world of work, past, present and future. There are plenty of multimedia hands-on experiences. The exhibition gives a lucid idea of the stress which people are subjected to in their everyday work and how protection measures have developed. The range of occupations stretch from classical factory work to information and communication technology, from weaver's stool to aircraft cockpit to the largest lap top computer in the world. Visitors can try out everything and experiment at will."
