Archaeological excursion:
Visiting data in archaeological institutions in the vicinity of Dortmund

One-day trip on March, 12th, 2004

This one-day trip is addressed to non-archaeologists and archaeologists likewise. It will have an informal workshop character. We will visit different archaeological institutions and get in touch with the main fields of research. Several aspects of data-acquisition, -management and -analysis will be discussed in an atmosphere that allows you to see - and maybe touch - artefacts behind the scenes.

Archaeological Museum of Westphalia in Herne

First stop is the "Westfälisches Museum für Archäologie" in Herne. The staff of this interesting new museum will talk about their experiences after one years work. Main topics could be strategies of questionnaire-design for visitor surveys, data-base management and archival issues. It is of course possible to visit the exhibition.

    For individual trips:
The archaeological museum is easy to reach by public transport. (e.g. S-Bahn S1 to Bochum main station (Bochum Hauptbahnhof (HBF) (direction Düsseldorf)), the metro U35 to "Archäologiemuseum/Kreuzkirche" (direction Herne), follow the signs in the station)
    Adress: Europaplatz 1, 44623 Herne

German Mining Museum in Bochum

In the "Deutsches Bergbaumuseum Bochum" we will be guided through the laboratories and be introduced to problems of dealing with analytical data (especially metallurgical). We will have lunch together in Bochum.

    For individual trips:
The mining museum is easy to reach by public transport. (S-Bahn S1 to Bochum main station (Bochum Hauptbahnhof (HBF) (direction Düsseldorf)), the metro U35 to "Bergbaumuseum" (direction Herne), follow the signs in the station)
Adress: Am Bergbaumuseum 28, 44791 Bochum

Archaeology in Dortmund

Back in Dortmund Dr. H. Brink-Kloke (head of the City of Dortmund Archaeology Department) will give us insights into the field-archaeologists daily work. The path of the artefact from soil to data will be made transparent. We would wish to close the day discussing further perspectives inspired by the famous Dortmunder beer.

Remark: The picture shows the "Adlerturm" in Dortmund where you can find an exhibition on the municipal history and also the mediaeval foundations of the tower.

    For individual trips:
The "Adlerturm" is easy to reach by public transport. You can take the metro-lines U41, U45, U47 or U49 to "Stadthaus", and then it is 2-3 minutes to walk.
    Adress: Ostwall 51a, 44137 Dortmund

The cost of this excursion are 15 Euro. We will meet Friday, March 12th, 2004, 9.00 a.m. at the conference reception.

The trip is organized by the working group Archaeology (Arbeitsgruppe Datenanalyse in der Archäologie).
