Getting Started

The following pages should help to make your start at TU Dortmund easier. First of all, we would like to introduce some of the facilities at the university that will assist you with the organisation of your studies on a day-to-day basis.

  • The Akademisches Auslandsamt (AAA, Office of International Relations)  is mainly there for you regarding all your questions concerning your admission to the university. It is, however, also the first place to go with regards to your other preparations before studying in Dortmund; one particular aspect is the allocation of accommodation.
  • A good way of getting to know and meeting students at  the Statistics Department is through the Fachschaft Statistik (or Statistics Student Council), who represent the students at the Department. There you can find out what activities are organised for students; activities within the scope of studies, as well as free time.
For some time now, the students council has kept a collection of sample exam papers and (oral) examination protocols of the current professors in Dortmund, which are available to all the students in the department. This collection can be requested online or by email.

  • The Studierendenwerk (student union) is, amongst other things, responsible for accommodation and the Mensa, the university canteen. The opening times and the current menu can both be found on the webpages of the Studentenwerk.

  • The University Main Library is on North Campus, where you can find an extensive range of technical literature for Mathematics & Statistics. All necessary information on registering can be found here.

You can also take out all sorts of books out on loan from the Stadt- und Landesbibliothek (the city and regional library), which is opposite the Hauptbahnhof (the main station) in Dortmund town centre.

  • Numerous photocopying machines are located throughout the university. Payment is made via GeldKarte. A GeldKarte-Chip is on your UniCard and can be loaded at machines placed on the Campus, for example in the foyer of the cafeteria on the North Campus. There is also the opportunity to photocopy in several copy shops on campus.

  • In order to register for your exams within the Statistics Department or your minor subject, you must use the BOSS system.

The Examination Office of the Statistics Department is responsible for the admission for the Masters students of Statistics courses and Data Sciences. Should you want to study a Statistic programme (B.Sc., M.Sc., Diplom), Data Analysis and Data Management (B.Sc.) or Datenwissenschaft (M.Sc.), it is also worth knowing that the Examination Office is responsible for the recognition of study achievements which have been achieved at other universities.

  • For the authorising of credentials, you should visit the Bürgerbüro (citizen office) of the city or the ASTA (General Committee of Students, the representation of all the students at the university).
