General questions

  1. Are there scholarships for international students?
Information regarding financing and scholarships are available here.

  2. Are there tuition fees?
No, there are no tuition fees. However, you will need to pay a so-called semester fee (German: Semesterbeitrag), which is used to finance the student union. This money mainly goes towards reasonable prices for meals in the cafeteria and the semester ticket for the use of the public transportation in NRW. You can find the current amount and information about the composition of the semester fee here (only in German).

  3. I would like to work while studying. Is that possible?
Our study programmes are full-time studies, which means every student is expected to invest around 30-40 hours of work per week. This includes attending lectures, tutorials, and seminars (some with compulsory attendance) as well as revision of the material covered in lectures, work on assignments, writing reports, and preparing talks. For that reason, our study programme is not suitable for part-time studies. Many of our students work a couple of hours per week to help finance their studies. Make sure to check if you fulfil the legal requirements. For most international students, taking a job as a student assistant or a job that is limited to a certain number of days per year is fine. The International Office’s page on financing might also be of interest to you.

  4. These FAQ did not answer my question. What can I do?
